comander

[Trawsgrifiad nad italeiddiwyd y dangosair ynddo:] I have not been able to search your database – it is failing to respond – but the last time I looked at the hard-copy GPC I could find no mention of 'comawnder/-wr. The element is implied in historic forms of Kemeys Commander/Cemais Comawndwr. I have kemais kymawndwr c. 1566 (bar over first e implying kemmais), Kemmeis Comaunder 1577, Kemmys Comaunder 1576-7, Kemes Comaunder 1600-7, Kemes Comunder 1611 and other examples as well as Kameis 1330, Kemyse after 1536-7Kemeis Commander 1763, Kemys Commander 1798 etc. The forms with Commander are generally later. I can let you have the sources. The church was a possession of the Knights Templar and is recorded in Ecclesia de Kemmeys, Templariorum 1254. If you have any queries on place-names In Powys, Gwent, Glamorgan and Carmarthenshire, I may be able to supply references.  Yours faithfully   Richard Morgan, Cardiff   [Nodyn mewn llawysgrifen:] angen x-gyf d.g. comawnder, etc
